THE NEXT LEVEL OF ABRASIVE TOOLS
In addition to Telcon’s diamond PCD and CVD technologies, another very useful technology is the abrasive diamond grit tools.
Such tools are vastly used in composites applications in CFRP, GFRP, MMC and CMC for finishing and complementary jobs, mostly done manually but also CNC applications as well.
Telcon posses two manufacturing technologies for these tools, EP – electro plated diamond grits, where diamond grits are placed on the tools under electric current in a specific bath, and Vacuum plating (VP) technology, where diamond grits are bonded to the tool inside a vacuum furnace in high temperature, what promises a highly adhesive bonding layer. The vacuum plating diamond grit layer is harder and will serve as long as the diamond layer stays sharp. The EP layer is less hard, but reveals continuously new diamond edges. Therefore, in softer materials, such as FRP it is better using EP tools, while on harder materials such as sintered ceramics, MMC and CMC it would be better using the VP.
Various tool types can be manufacture with diamond grits technology, such as: endmills, drills, countersinks, hole saws, cutting discs and more.
The range of diameters can vary depend on the application, please contact us to verify.
Diamond grit tools can be used in various applications: Aerospace, Automotive, Marine, Wind turbine, Infrastructure, Sports and Chemical.
The machining operation done with EP and VP tools is considered grinding and not milling (or drilling), since there is no regular chip forming but mostly dust, and the diamond grit edges are functioning as the cutting edges.
That means, cutting speeds in use should be grinding cutting speeds. For instance, 100m/min (300 SFM) cutting speed for milling CFRP, when EP or VP tools is in use, cutting speed should be at around 1000m/min, or 17m/s (3000 SFM).
